Mefenamic acid
Indications/Uses
Relief of fever & mild to moderate pain including headache, dental pain, post-op pain, dysmenorrhoea; musculoskeletal & joint disorders eg, OA & RA.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 500 mg then 250 mg 6 hrly. Childn >6 mth 25 mg/kg daily in divided doses. Max duration: 7 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Inflammatory bowel disease, peptic or intestinal ulceration. Renal or hepatic impairment.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to aspirin or NSAIDs. Asthma or bronchospasm, bleeding disorder, peptic ulceration, HTN, cardiac impairment. Prolonged therapy. Renal & hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, reversible hemolytic anemia & skin rashes.
Drug Interactions
Oral anticoagulants, lithium, MTX, cardiac glycosides, ACE inhibitors, β-blockers, diuretics, quinolones, phenytoin, sulfonylurea antidiabetics, corticosteroids.
